Free Sewing Pattern: Simple Fabric Shrug You Can Make in One Hour
Share
Looking for a beautiful, lightweight layer that adds elegance without the bulk of a cardigan? This elegant wrap drapes softly, works with bridal looks or everyday outfits, and requires only one large rectangle of material.
This wrap is ideal for brides who want a delicate shoulder cover, creatives who love effortless handmade pieces, or gift-makers looking for something stylish and simple.
Skill Level: Easy (if you can sew a straight line, you can make this)
Finished Size: One size fits most — approx. 38" x 44" (96.5 cm x 112 cm) before folding and seaming
Materials Needed: 1.5–2 yards of lightweight woven fabric such as chiffon, silk satin, rayon, crepe, or lightweight tweed; matching thread; scissors or rotary cutter; pins or clips; sewing machine; measuring tape; and an iron.
Fabric Cutting: Cut one rectangle measuring 38" tall × 44" wide (96.5 cm × 112 cm). This single piece becomes the entire shrug.
Step 1: Hem All Edges
Hem all four edges by folding the raw edge ¼", then folding again ¼", and stitching all the way around to create a clean finish with beautiful drape.
Step 2: Fold the Fabric
Fold the rectangle in half so the 44" edges meet. The folded piece now measures 38" × 22" (96.5 cm × 56 cm), with the fold forming the top of the shrug.

Step 3: Mark Armholes
Measure 7 inches (18 cm) down from the fold on both side edges and mark the spot with pins. These unsewn areas will become the armholes.
Step 4: Sew the Side Seams
Beginning at each pin, sew straight down to the bottom edge. Leave the top 7 inches unsewn on each side. This simple construction creates the sleeves and body in one step.
Step 5: Press Your Seams
Press your seams gently (especially for delicate fabrics like chiffon or silk) to give the shrug a polished, professional finish.

Your Shrug Is Complete!
Slip your arms through the openings and enjoy the elegant drape. This shrug pairs beautifully with bridal gowns, evening dresses, sundresses, linen outfits, or strapless silhouettes. The personality of the finished piece completely depends on your fabric choice—silk chiffon for a bridal bolero, rayon for everyday softness, crepe for structure, or tweed for a Chanel-inspired look.
Customization Ideas: Use lace trim or beads for a vintage touch, cut the rectangle wider for extra drape, or add front ties for closure.
